Over the last month, Trina has had me on a grain free diet and luckily enough we had Canagan grain free dry dog food to try with my homemade meals. Now as a dog, I was not sure what this meant, so I wanted to know about the products and why a grain free diet would be good for me.
About a grain feed diet
Dogs, like all carnivores, are biologically incapable of fully digesting grains such as corn, wheat and barley. This is because we don’t have the enzyme called amylase in our saliva, which helps to break down these starchy carbohydrates. We dogs don’t have amylase in our saliva.
Who would just love Canagan?
Being hypoallergenic, this kibble is perfect for dogs who suffer from allergies, or can’t tolerate gluten, wheat, or dairy products. However it is also good for every adult dog out there who needs an easier digestible diet.

throughout the ages, man and dog have evolved side by side, living and hunting together, protecting each other in a unique alliance. Canagan – from an ancient Celtic word for wolf – was created to honour this bond. All dogs are the direct descendants of grey wolves domesticated by our ancient forefathers, and their dietary needs have remained virtually unchanged to this day. ~Canagan
Taste Test and Review
Canagan comes in three tasty flavors and I was lucky enough to try their free run chicken for my taste test and review. The kibble was made with freshly prepared chicken, sweet potatoes, seaweed, marigold, cranberry and camomile.
- Sweet potato: highly digestible, energy rich, rich in anti-oxidants and totally tasty
- Seaweed: a natural source of minerals that helps support my thyroid and metabolism
- Marigold: strengthens my immune system and stimulates while cell production
- Cranberry: excellent source for vitamin C
- Camomile: calming and helps reduce stress
Canagan is made with all natural ingredients in small batches and you can tell due to the kibble pieces are all a little bit different in colour, shape and size. I must say that I really enjoyed this kibble and I also enjoyed it as a treat. In fact when photographing the kibble, I kept jumping on her for another little taste test! They really are that tasty just on their own. I had mine mixed with Trina’s home cooking and I was pleased that the kibble stayed crunchy in my bowl. I also noticed that when it came time for “my nature” call, I was regular and let’s just say it was an “easy move”!
