Puppy Training: From Puppy To Perfect Review

guide to puppy training

I remember when I got Maggie, I got her first, and then the puppy training book, so I had a lot of catching up to do to get her trained as quickly as possible. I was living in New York at the time in a loft on the third floor in the middle of the West Village, and it was not the easiest place for puppy training.

How I wish that I had From Puppy to Perfect written by Janet Menzies for the very reason that she nailed exactly who I was, and what I needed to hear. It was like she was writing it for me.

I was that new puppy owner who believed she was the dog trainer. Hey, I grew up with dogs all my life, so I considered myself someone who knew dogs. Boy was I wrong, yes I grew up with dogs, but I had a family (mum) who really supported my dog, and I was the after school dog walker. This is not being a dog owner, this is having a dog as part of your family.

Yup that was me in a nutshell, while Maggie and my four cats thought I had really dived into the deep end of the pool. Since then with a lot of trial and error and many lost shoes along the way, I am happy to say I have a well trained beagle, who is happy, gentle and social.

About The Book

The book starts with a survival guide that helps you in the first few weeks of being a new puppy owner. It then gradually takes the reader through everything they need to know to train your pup all the way to a grown up dog perfectly! It’s straight forward and fun to read. In fact you will feel like an expert by the time you finish using the book.

Author Janet Menzies

Janet Menzies is a professional author and journalist who works and competes spaniels. She is also a dog correspondent for The Field and writes a monthly column on dog training. So you can feel good knowing that she really knows what she is talking about.

But what about someone who just got a puppy and doesn’t want to go through what I did? Feeling overwhelmed? Not sure what to do? Well I have a friend who’s niece just got a brand new pug, and she’s a first time puppy owner too! So I decided if I was really going to get an up to date review, she and her new puppy would be the perfect candidates to tell me what they thought of the book and if it helped.

So I sent her the book to see if it would be helpful and here is what she had to say…

Puppy Training Lola

puppy training LolaLauren just recently got a pug puppy which she called Lola, who is currently 3 months old and is full of puppy energy. She has started training her and is training her puppy to:

  • sit
  • lie down
  • and most importantly toilet trained!

However she really wanted to get to know more about her pup’s needs and get some advice on raising a happy well adjusted and of course trained puppy.

She found the book very useful and was pleased how she was able to train her puppy with the aide of the book.

The book also helped me to teach Lola how lie down and it worked! Overall I would recommend this book to a puppy owner because it is easy to read and helps you so much.

Besides teaching you how to get your puppy to perfect, it also has a section on the different classes of dogs. Lauren loved reading up on the toy group which her frisky little pug falls into. She found it very useful and learned a lot more about her little bundle of fur.

The best part of the book is when it talks about the toy group because I have a pug

I found the chapter helped if you are thinking of getting a puppy. Each group of dogs have different needs and temperaments and it can really help you choose which dog would be perfect for your lifestyle.

I’d like to thank Lauren for trying out the book and I’m so pleased to see Lola become that perfect little puppy!

So if you are thinking of getting a puppy or know someone who is getting a new little four padded wonder, I’d grab this book in a hurry. It’s fun to read with simple steps that anyone can understand and the results work!
